Melbourne Olympic Park Trust

Rod Laver Arena and Vodafone Stadium, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

Specification

  • We were asked to come up with an alternative to the aisle lighting required to illuminate the leading edge of the stairs.
  • The profile was to have an anti slip factor exceeding the Australian New Zealand Standard 3661;1.1993.
  • The profile was to be durable enough to withstand the foot traffic of one million plus people per year.

Design Characteristics

The retractable roof would be open 90% of the time, during sporting events, so consideration was to be given to the harshness of the U.V.  Furthermore, the stair nosing would have to perform to the standards required when the stadium was in concert mode with the roof closed.  The system had to be flexible enough to cope with both situations.

System materials

The system was based on a clear anodized to 25 microns (required for heritage listed products) aluminium profile with a long lasting luminous polypropylene insert.

Result achieved

The current system is highly visible in blackout conditions and has made the steps anti slip, ensuring the safety of both stadiums. There is limited maintenance required as it has removed the need for wiring and other ongoing costs.  The installation for Rod Laver Arena was done during down time and took 3 days; Vodafone Stadium was done during the construction of the stadium over a similar time frame.  Stairs were able to be walked on immediately.
